I have a `75 135 Johnson Bass boat with the rack and pinion steering set up. The cable runs down the siderail, exits thru a hole in the hull then to the tilt tube and screws on.

Its seems impossible to remove the cable with out lifting and removing the motor.Very tight fit.

Now, could I just cut off the cable at the engine end, pull out the old cable, then install the new cable, starting from the back and get it snaked in from the rear??

Anyone tried this???

if you can get the old one out, you can get the new one in. lift the motor. personally, if it is a 1975 set up, i would replace completely with a no feed back rotary system. easier to snake, fits same cut out, on the console. i also suggest you read this and install the protector.
