Steering Cable Replacement

Hello,
I have determined my steering cable is corroded/frozen and I would like some information on removing it, this is a '61 larson boat with a '72 evinrude 100 hp Starflite, I removed the cable from the engine, and see how it slides out thru a pipe that leads to the steering unit, however the attachment at the steering wheel is more complicated, the cable at this end is attached to a larger cylindrical metal tube (which I would describe looks like a silencer) attached with a nut; I thought the cable would detach by this nut but as I turn the nut the cable also turns), this unit connects/inserts into the steering unit with 4 bolts holding it in (it appears). I don't want to remove anything I don't have to, so any information would be greatly appreciated. I have studied similiar threads and I don't see any pins that appear to hold the cable in. The steering unit doesn't look accesible without cutting a part of the dash out so I'm hoping there is an easier trick to this part, thanks:)

Re: Steering Cable Replacement

Thanks, that's a pretty modest priced fix that I think I can do myself, it does look like getting an accurate measurement for the correct length cable appears to be the hard part, appreciate the info

I agree with JCF350. Definitely go with the kit. You could probably clean the old cable and get a little more life out of it, but it probably wouldn't last too long.

Re: Steering Cable Replacement

OK well last check before I order, decided to order the PreTech Stainless Steel Rotary Steering system Package http://www.iboats.com/Single_Stainl... cable--**********.539551363--view_id.368736. I used a hose as a guide to get the correct length cable by inserting it into the cable pathway, from center of wheel to center of outboard connection, 16'7", the directions seem to state I round to next length, or 17'. If I understand this kit, it should attach to the console, the shaft should extend thru the console thru a hole and the steering wheel attachs to the shaft. Thanks for any input
Janus:)

With a little more experience I find out I have a rack mounted steering system, but I guess it doesn't really matter whether I put a rack or rotary system in since I am replacing the whole unit (?)

with a 100hp i strongly suggest going with a nofeedback rotary system. the NFB system you don't have to grip the wheel. to stop the torque steer. you can turn the wheel loose, to get a drink of adult beverage, if you partake.

Re: Steering Cable Replacement

Sounds like a good idea, I'm looking at the specs on that model, can you tell me what they mean by "Require a 3.25" Cut Out Size"
Thanks Sunaj

That is the diameter of hole you need to drill/cut out of your dashboard to install the helm unit. However, wait until the unit arrives and read the instructions just to make sure before you begin carving up your dash.

The instructions that come with these kits are pretty self-explanatory, however if you have any trouble, there's lots of experience here to guide you along.
