About 6 months ago, I had a new motor installed. At that time, I was told the steering cable was frozen. And trying to break it free, I stripped the gears in the helm box. Basically, I want to order the new box and cable before I remove the old cable so im not having to lift the motor twice. But the cable does not say the length on it like everyone says it should. I have a 1985 Wellcraft V20. 21 Ft long. Anyone know how long the cable is? And Will any cable work with my Evinrude?

Re: Steering cable replacement

Lots of good info in here, look around & you might find answers before some one has a chance to give you 1:
How To Measure Steering Cables, iboats.com How To Library

This probably has important info too:
Steering Issue

Is it that ^^^ 1985 Evinrude 150 that is your 'new' motor, or a different new motor?

Might ought to see if someone replies in 1 forum @iboats before starting another steering thread in another @iboats:
Steering cable replacement

Pix always help, what steering setup do you have at the helm? That's the steering box you're asking about, correct?

Which steering setup at the motor, tilt tube?

An engine model # might help, there were a few in 1985:

Does you Evinrude use this style steering hookup:

To this type of tilt tube:
