I am trying to replace my steering cable. I have identified it as a rack system but have no ideal what kind of cable I need. Will any rack type cable work that is the correct length or do I need a more specific cable? I have tried looking for numbers on the cable but the cable is cracked at the motor end. The cable is blue in color, the boat is a 1994 and I assume the cable is a 1994 as well, but the motor is a 1989 85HP but it's not the original motor that came with the boat, the original was a yamaha I belive. Hopefully this will help narrow it down. I was looking at the teleflex cables but they have one called "The Rack" and then the regular cables. What's the difference?

If you look here on Iboats at the merchandise section, you can put in your motor info and steering cable length and it will automatically generate the results for you. The prices are very competitive too!!

Re: Steering Cable Replacment

Rack steering systems very often come with cable and rack as an assembly which is not serviceable. Even rotary helms have a very expensive cable to replace. Sometimes it is better to replace the whole helm and cable, rack or rotary. Most cable ends are standard and you pass them through the tilt tube on the engine. A steering bard passes from the cable end to the engine snout.

When you refer to helm are you meaning the entire steering wheel assembley and cable or just the rack and cable? I am looking at these two rack cable systems on ebay. Do you think either would work or do I need to know something more specific about my setup other than it's a rack system?

Re: Steering Cable Replacment

I've already measured for my cable using the teleflex measuring guide. I know I need a 26' or 27' cable but will measure the actual cable once I find out which 'type' of cable I need before ordering. I guess the simple question I am asking is will either cable work with my steering wheel and motor provided they are the correct length? One is called 'The Rack' and the other is just a rack system, I don't know what the difference is between them...

On my cable the cable length was writtin on the rack side...about a foot away. I have an 84' bayliner capri 15 footer and my cable length is 14 feet. There is an older rack system used on old boats and a newer one. You need to completely remove the cable and get the part number or get a new kit.

Depending on the steering bezel and gear either one of the cables will work.
Take the old out and check the #s on it.
Post a pic of the stering and slide.
