I'm getting ready to hook up my outboard, it came with the control box with throttle/shifter controls, but i need steering cables. I have an old style helm that looks like it uses two rotary style cables (i'm not sure if thats right, its just an assumption?) The outboard ('87 evinrude 50) has a rod that looks like a small tiller, i'm assuming thats where the steering mounts to. Would i be better off to get a new rotary style system (like the teleflex) with a single cable? What else do i need to hook this up?
any help is appreciated...

Re: steering cables?

right, it seems like buying the whole kit isn't much more than the cost of two rotary cables...anything else that i'd need (other than that kit?

Re: steering cables?

you will need the evinrude link arm, top picture, goes from end of cable to the motor. each outboard brand has a different link arm. if you order from iboats, by phone they will get you the right stuff. be sure it is for the 87 50 hp. there are different sizes. by the way i have an 88 50 hp.

Re: steering cables?

it is one of the simplest installs. and well worth the money. the nofeedback allows you to be able to take you have off the wheel, which is really not advised.

I've had a No-Feedback system on my rig for the past eight years and I'm really happy with it. As I recall it was a few extra bucks, but I think it's been well worth the money.

Re: steering cables?

I salvaged one of those nfb helms from a boat that I scrapped last year, I had installed it into one of my boats without even realizing what it was, I've since bought that same style helm for each of my boats. It allowed me to straighten the anode fin and I removed the hydrofoil wing from my one boat and I gained both speed and eliminated all torque steer.
I wouldn't use anything but now.
