When I bought my bass boat it had two steering cables.
Why? Do some engines use two?or was somebody being lazy?

Re: Steering Cables

Someone was being lazy and didnt want to pull the old one out. If there original all the other wires and controls are tied together and can be a PITA to get the old cable out.

Or they just wanted a back up:confused:

Re: Steering Cables

In high HP applications it's either hydraulic or 2 cables. Pretty much anything that can get you over 50 mph should have 2.
If 1 cable snaps you don't loose controle but also it takes the slop out of the steering by having 2.
Imagine driving your car down the interstate with a bunch of play in the steering...
Your bass boat may have had a bigger engine on it at one time.

Some are set up with a cable coming in from either side.

Re: Steering Cables

I have seen cable pulley systems come in from both sides back in the early days, but never a single cable style in both directions.....but learn something new every day.

On higher HP engines, I have seen two, but both went down the same side of the boat and probably the cables, like Teleflex/Morse make have a max hp rating for a single cable so on the big mils you need 2.

Thanks for the replies.

Since I plan on upgrading to a higher HP someday I will keep it in place.
