I have an old runabout with cable and pulley steering and was looking to replace it with a better system. I have been looking at the rotary sytems from Teleflex, is this what I should be looking at. Also how are these attached to the outboard and do I need any special adapters for my outboard(1989 Johnson 28)?

Re: Steering change

Teleflex/Morse systems come in rotary and rack and pinion for smaller outboards. The system is a cable within a sheath (hollow cable/tube) and (it) attaches to the engines clamp brackets, (locked in place with a large nut).... mounts through a large hole in each bracket just above the top of the transom.

The sheath deadman's to the clamp brackets and the center cable has a rod on the end which normally proturdes out the port side of the port clamp bracket (since most helms are on the starboard side). Attaching to this rod is another rod that attaches to something (lift handle, bracket) that is connected to the engine.

Rotating the steering wheel pushes or pulls on the center cable/rod which moves the engine back and forth.

Rack and pinion No Feedback Systems (NFS) are very popular and very nice. BTDT

Key to success is nice smooth slow sweeps for the cable. No sharp turns. Much more positive than cable steering.

HTH

Mark

Re: Steering change

Thanks for the reply. I found a picture but needed an explanation to clarify.
