Re: steering conversion

Its very easy, I did mine like 20yrs ago. The new system came with steering wheel and all it was only about $150.00 if i' remember correctly all you need to do is measure to the nearest foot and get one the proper length, all the brackets ect come in the kit.

Re: steering conversion

Same place your pulley steering attaches at the motor, kit may even come with a couple different brackets, there's a swivel mount that bolts on the transom and that about it, the rest goes under the helm and the cable gets tied up here and there or lays below deck whatever you set up requires.

Re: steering conversion

I was told the best way to connect new cable to the motor was T & R OSM330. This is an adapter for motors that dont have a thru mount bracket as part of the motor. My 71 johnson doesn't have the cable mount thru bracket ..... but has the transom mount support tube type ; swivel system . I am not to the stage at which I have to decide which system to use .....but I can see where the transom mount adapter would be a better choice.

Do you have a link to this kit? I also have a 71 Johnson that I am wanting to put on my pontoon, but my current steering system requires a through the tilt tube type mounting.

Re: steering conversion

The link below is to the Teleflex Online Library where you can read/download installation instructions for their products. You mentioned in your other post that you think your Johnson is a 1958 model. Those models had a "lifting handle" that served as the attachment point for all types of steering systems. The cable and pulley systems require one type of connection bracket while mechanical push/pull steering systems require a different one. I verified with Teleflex last year they still offer the brackets for J&E 40HP and below motors although it does not show-up in their library. i can post the part number if you are interested. Good luck!
