My boat had an MR drive on it, but that is beyond repair so I'm replacing it with a secondhand Alpha unit. The steering was via a teleflex cable, which fitted into a bracket on the MR inner transom plate, obviously the Alpha plate is different. Apparently I can get an adapter for a couple of hundred bucks, but I'm on a tight budget and need to make every saving possible to finance the other parts. Has anyone made the conversion, or can anyone post a picture of what it looks like. I'm sure I can make one, just need to know what I'm aiming for.

Re: Steering Conversion

The new alpha plate has no mounting points for the teleflex cable, it's completely different to the original MR one.

Re: Steering Conversion

I'll bet he's had an MC-1, not an MR... The Alpha One is EXACTLY the same as the MR, has a tube like Bondo said. The Alpha One has a couple of horizontal mounting lugs for a square block that a tube goes through...

Have a look at this picture of the plate... Is this the one you have now?

Is this the one you HAD before?

I think Chris has it, here are photos of the old and new inner transom plates;Old1.jpgNew1.jpg

The old plate still has the end of the teleflex cable attached.

Nope,.... That ain't the teleflex cable housing, that's what the cable end goes Into...

The MR/ Alpha have abit different assembly like that, that bolts in the upper corner, left side of yer picture, bracket arm...

Those are the pieces, yer missin'...

Re: Steering Conversion

So, referring to the link Chris posted http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...3&bnbr=20&bdesc=TRANSOM+PLATE+AND+SHIFT+CABLE

Part 18 there is the equivalent to the tube on the photo on my old drive. So if I machined up a square block to fit in between the forks (where piece 19 does in that sketch) then bored a hole through it that my existing tube would fit in to and put a grub screw through the side of the block to lock it in position and provide adjustment then that would solve my problems (well, this one anyway). Anyone know what the thread in the holes in the forks are? then I can make the pins up as well.

Re: Steering Conversion

The 'grub screws' aren't that expensive, why not just buy them from a Merc dealer.... Machine up everything else. Remember that the block needs to have clearance in the fork so it can swivel.
