First off want to say thank you in advance to any and all helpers. I'm new to the forum and look forward to learning and contributing the best i can. I bought a 16 foot doral deep hull last summer and currently has rack and pinion steering installed. About a month ago I bought a 1969 Johnson 40 hp and am looking to install on this boat. Can i buy something to make this steering work or must i buy a whole new steering system . I know absolutely nothing about this set up so all info is helpful. Im trying to find information myself but am having a tough time . Thank you

The existing rack & pinion will work on your Johnson. We need some photos of the boat transom and the clamp/swivel on the motor to ID what needs to be done.

Welcome to iboats.

Here are the pictures . I'm sorry the transom picture is so bad but I had to take a picture of another phones screen that is broken to get it . Boat is currently covered and stored at the moment. hope this helps. motor model is 40es69r. I dont have a close up of the rack and pinion cables or set up however it is all installed and the pole defently works. Any and all advice on parts needed to convert and install for this motor with the rack and pinion steering currently installed would be greatly appreciated !!

Visit your local boat shop for an adapter kit.----Or if you are on a budget you can find a tilt tube off a newer motor.---Most makes have the same tube.----Weld some brackets on and mount that tube.---Attach your cable to it.---You will still need a steering arm too.----Note------The generator on that motor must be working to avoid damage to clutch parts .

are steering arms universal? also is there a place on the engine where the arm would mount even though this engine wasn't build for this steering in mind?

Visit your local boat shop.----Explain what you want to do.----They will show you the bits you need.----Then you decide, hand over the cash or say --" I can make that myself " ----Your choice.
