Steering Frozen

I have a 90hp Mercury that I got from a friend of mine. It's been sitting in his back yard for 8 months. He kept starting it to make sure it still runs but hasn't turned the wheel in a long time to the point where it won't budge. I know it's not the steering cable cause I disconnected, but from the looks of it the piston is corroded pretty badly. <br />Any help on what I can do to free the piston?

Did you disconnect the steering cable from the engine?<br /><br />If not, do so and see if the engine turns freely.<br /><br />I'll bet it's the cable.

Saturate with penetrating oil spray and put a locking pliers on the flat end and try to turn it a little.Pump some grease into the fitting and keep working it to get it to turn before you try to retract it.Pull on it as you work it with the pliers trying to get the piston out a little more than it is.Once you get it moving it will get easier.Dont force the st.wheel to try to get it moving. charlie

Mine did that after a season off. Disconnect the steering cable. Saturate everything with some kind of penetrant. Get a 2x4 and a big hammer. Put the 2x4 against the steering guide and whack the board with the hammer. Mine just popped loose. Now I lube it with LPS 3 every six months
