Im new to this forum and appreciate any advice that might come my way. I have a starcraft 24 ft pontoon boat with a 25 hp evinrude outboard...runs great but the steering mechanism has stopped working.
The coiled cable comes out under the helm and recoils all the way in but seems to have come unattached at the engine. Do I need to replace the cable? How difficult is it to get into the mechanics
of the system at the engines end ? I guess I could really use an explanation of how the steering system works and how things are connected. Again thank you from a novice boater and mechanic.

Re: steering gone bad

Chip, if your steering wheel won't turn, the steering cable needs to be replaced, probably a Teleflex system. Not a hard repair on a pontoon. Under the helm(steering wheel) the cable should attach to the steering box with 4 or 6 bolts, at the engine, the cable should go into a tube directly in front of the engine. Disconnect there. Make sure there aren't any wires tied to the cable where it exits the floor under the pontoon and pull the whole cable assembly out. Most of the time, you can read the numbers on the cable, order same length. When replacing, do not make any tight bends in the cable or you may damage it. Hope this helps.

THANKS FOR REPOSTING THE SCENARIO. I WILL CHECK OUT THE NUMBERS AND LENGTHS. I TRIED TO DISCONNECT THE ASSEMBLY AT THE ENGINE BUT WITH CHANNEL WRENCH COULDNT SEEM TO GET A GOOD GRIP IN THE LARGE HEADED BOLTS. ANY ADVICE FOR LOOSENING UP THIS ASSEMBLY IS CERTAINLY APPRECIATED. THANKS AGAIN. IM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS SIGHT, CHIP
