Hi,
I was a member of this forum and did not post for a while and apparently it forgot my user name so i had to reregister... anyway i have a 1974 16 foot Baja with a 115 hp johnson outboard. I am replacing the dash board plywood and now i need to replace my helm unit. It has alot of play in it and would be impossible to remove intact becasue of the situation with the dash. I think it is a rotary helm. It has the steering cable attached to a lower area and directly above it has the same thing with no cable attached and just an old piece of what looks like a steering cable that moves in and out as the wheel is turned. It has no markings on it so it might be a Baja origional. i am just wondering what i should get to replace it.
Thanks.

Re: Steering helm

I was wondering if dual cable steering is necessary for my boat. i was told that it would be good for me to have. Also, how does dual cable steering work?
thanks

Re: Steering helm

Dual cable allows you to remove a lot of slop in the wheel for quicker response. What you do is adjust the dual cable kit's thru-tube on the motor so there's a little pressure against the other. What I do is put everything together, put the steering in the middle, and the last step is to tighten the thru-tube's nuts. I push on the cable sleeve and snug up the nuts there.

The main idea of dual cable is for double strength. V-6s need it, especially the bigger ones.

Re: Steering helm

i've been using the single systems for 20 years, with out any problems. with a 115, it's overkill and a waste of gas money.
