Steering issue and trim issue

I will be contacting my marine mechanic later on this week and drop the boat back off to him to take a look at come this weekend, but I figured I would just fire these issues out to the general forum users and see what kind of information comes out. Boat model is listed below in my signature. I do have my boating registrations if needing of serial numbers of drive units.

issue 1:

When using the tilt/trim to lower/raise the stern drive when parked (engine off), it makes the 2nd sound when its down all the way, which as I know means its all the way down. When raising it the noise stops at just above the "gauge reading" of half way point. According to what I have seen of other Merc drive units, the drive should be going up higher.

Is it normal for the trim motor to not make any lifting noises when going past the half way to completely up position? ... OR ... Is this NOT a normal condition and it should be looked at because something isnt right and it should be going all the way to completely up position as reading on gauge? I have not tried to hold onto the "up" button longer for fear of it doing some kind of damage.

issue 2:

Since this is my first owned boat and first real time on water, after leaving the marine on route to our cottage, I was under the impression that I was just oversteering the boat. After driving it for a total of maybe 3hours on the weekend, when proceeding upstream and downstream in a river, when I let go of the steering wheel in what i think "should" be a straight position, doing only 1500rpms (mph not registering a speed), the boat wanders to the left, then wanders over to the right and back again. Usually I intercept it for fear of it tracking towards a dock or another boater.

Is this a normal condition or is the current of the river affecting it from tracking perfectly straight? When the wheel is put into that position it does not rotote nor move on its own, just the boat will pivot from side to side. We have not tried on open water to see if same effect.

thanks to any replies.

The low speed wondering back and forth is very normal with a stern drive boat. Smart tabs would really help that.
Does your trim system have a trailer button? I know on some boats the trim only lifts it so far then the trailer button raises it in full up position.

Re: Steering issue and trim issue

Thanks for your reply gary. So the side walking for now, is a normal condition and I should just deal with it then. Reason why I was concerned with it wandering, was when doing some tight maneuvers around other boaters and locking through etc. I didnt want to get frustrated and stressed over it doing something its not.

Hmmmm i dont recall seeing a trailer button anywhere.... hmmm.. would it be below the trim up/down toggle? ... I think maybe I do. Does it look like a square ..pad?

Because I know that when I first saw the boat in 06 it was up high, then when it was parked in 07 it was lower, then when using it in on the weekend it only went up so far also.

I will have to take another look at it on the weekend.. lol.

In reply to my previous post, yes ... the trailer button is there and it does function normally. My uncle was at the helm and raised it up for me so I could peer over the stern to take a look at the operation of it.

Next weeks project is figuring out why the navigation light on the bow doesnt work.
