Hi,

I know they sell steering conversion kits for many small outboards. But is there anything I can get for a Johnson 9.5 from the 70s? I would really only care to steer it with a wheel and could use the tiller for the throttle still. I tried searching but no luck yet. I have the Johnson on a 12' jon boat.

Thanks!

The OEM remote kits for the lowboy 9.5s are quite rare - I have only ever seen one over the years. Not that you can't find one, but you'll probably be looking for awhile. I'd start at a long-established Johnrude dealer locally and see what they may have collecting dust in a back room somewhere. Try to work your way "in" a bit if needed, .ie they shun you because you want parts for a motor made during the Nixon administration. Donuts at morning coffee time can go a long way to getting them to actually take the time to look.
Outside of that, you may have to be a bit of a MacGyver and do some backyard engineering...
