So Itook the time to "Winterize" my boat as always. But it seems that this year i neglected something. After upgrading the electronics during the winter and adding a few amenities ( anchor mount, new pulleys, cabin heater, etc) I was excited to get wet. We traveled 2 hours to the beach, backed it down the ramp, fired it up, turned on all of the electronics, unhooked, got ready to back out of the dock and noticed that my steering had locked up. no amount of beating pulling or pb blaster would allow it to move. i disconnected the out drive from the hydraulic steering cylinder and it moves free back and forth. I disconnected the hydraulic cylinder from the shaft coming from the steering cable and it works fine. However the steering cable cylinder will not slide in and out no matter what. I have read where some outboard guys have had this happen and have to literally beat the shaft out of the housing clean it then put it back together. Do you suppose this is my problem also? 4.3 mercruiser with alpha 2 outdrive hydraulic assisted steering.

Ayuh,... I'd almost guarantee it...

Dried out grease, 'n corrosion does it,...

Hopefully, you can get it apart, without destroyin' the aluminum tube,...

New steering cables are what you need.

Re: Steering locked up!!

Update: I loosened and pulled out the steering cable from the tube connected to the hydraulic assist. I turned the steering wheel abd the cable works fine. I then removed the small hollow bolt on the side that holds the tube to the hydraulic assist pivot point. It simply will not slide off of the stud. Is there any how to guides as to how to disassemble the steering components?
