Steering not playing ball

The steering on my 96 Bayliner 1850 has about 1/8 play in it before it engages in turning the outdrive. The slack seems to be be at the wheel / rear assembly rather than the hydrolic mechansim.

Can anybody shed any light on how to fix this?

I would not expect any better. The play is likely in the cable going from the wheel to the hydraulic unit. You could try bleeding the hydraulics, or replacing the cable. I don't think either is going to make a significant difference. If you get the opportunity, I would suggest that you compare your steering to another boat to determine if yours is really different.
