Steering Problem

I have a 2005 Bentley Cruise 200 with a 50 hp mercury 2 stroke. If you turn the steering wheel at very low rpm it is fine. At high rpm there is a popping noise when the wheel is turned. I cannot figure out how to access the steering mechanism. Do I have to remove the whole console? I would also like your opinions on what my problem could be. It does not have hydraulic steering.
Thanks.

Re: Steering Problem

Sounds like you may have stripped a tooth in the helm. You'll either have a rotary or a rack helm.

If it's a rack, it's possible the bolts that hold the helm to the rack have loosened and the gear is slipping.

Re: Steering Problem

Does the motor 'follow' the wheel or does it tend to straighten out?

Re: Steering Problem

There should be a cover or something on the console that you can remove to access the helm.

Re: Steering Problem

On a bentley you have to remove the top of the console to get too the steering..
