I have a 1985 sea ray with a 5.7 I/O merc. At low speeds steering is very hard, I need two hands to turn the wheel some times. Once on plane steering is fine, but heading back into the harbor at headway speed it tightens up again.....?????

Re: steering problems

Does it have "torque steer" meaning it wants to pull hard in one direction?

Re: steering problems

Has it always done this? If its only just started to happen that it sounds like a problem with the steering, but if its always done it than it could well be a normal phenomenon that happens to many boats as they move through idle to planning, the transition period and resultant boat angle can put a huge strain on the drive and make it very hard to steer, if you can avoid the transition speed that may resolve the problem. If you cannot avoid the speed that causes the ‘in-between’ boat angle than try adjusting your trim when the steering tightens up, I have a ski boat with a Volvo outdrive and boat angle especially that ‘not planning, not idling’ speed can seriously affect the weight of the steering and I can only imagine a bigger boat such as yours would be a lot worse. Good luck, enjoy your boat.

Re: steering problems

Had a similar problem with very stiff steering that was fixed last summer on my 1989 VIP.

Our fearless "Vice Admiral for life" Don S helped me troubleshoot this problem last summer. You can search for the thread. Ultimately the steering cable was corroded internally.

Since I was going to be out of town for 2 weeks, I paid to have it done for me, and it was the best $275 I ever spent(Teleflex cable, new rack & pinion gear and labor)

Good luck
