I have an 86' 150 blackmax. The steering required a feat of ultimate strength to turn. I disconnected the steering cables and noticed that it is difficult to turn the motor by hand. I ended up buying a transom bracket complete with steering pivot off some dude on Ebay. It looks like it is going to be alot of work to replace it. I started the dis-assembly and could not remove the 2 bolts at the top of the steering pivot. I loosened the bolts and it kept on spinning. I tried to tighten them and the kept spinning. Are there nuts inside the exhaust portion that can only be reached by removing the power head? The manuals do not explain how to remove the motor.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Steering Problems

For the work you are going to do to replace the midsection, you probably could have cleaned up your original midsection.

The upper motor mounts (bolts at the top of the steering arm) are probably not going to come loose. You will need to pull the powerhead and lower unit and then the exhaust extension to get to them.

You might just pull the steering shaft and clean up the bushings.

I wish it were that simple....The bottom yolk appears to be dangling becaust the bottom of the steering arm is rusted really bad. The retaining ring fell off and has nothing to clamp on to.
