Steering pulls to the right

Hi to All,

My 16' Tims Custom flat with '81 70hp Johnson runs great but pulls hard to the right. I mean if I let go it will certainly turn hard right.

I know there is an adjustment to be made with the thing under the rear of the cavitation plate but I wonder if it would make enough of a correction. Anyway I wanted to get ideas from the crew at Iboats first.

If it pulls to the right, move the tab to the right. Your trim angle has a lot to do with it also. And the height of the motor.

Agree. Fine tune the trim tab. When you get it in the correct position mark a line on the tab and the lower unit for reference.

Re: Steering pulls to the right

I'm sorry I forgot to include that I'm also using a cmc tnt which has a 6" setback.

So the thing i'm refering to is called a "trim angle" adjustment.

Dhadley, I recently had to lower my motor and now it's aprox. 1/2" below the bottom on the boat. That is with the cav. plate and bottom of the boat parallel. You say if it pulls to the right move the tab to the right? That seems like it would make it pull more to the right if i'm thinking about it correctly. Also if I trim so the rpm increase (prop out, front of the boat up) I start to porpose up and down, I trim back a little.

Thanks
Beck

The torque adjustment is kinda confusing to say the least. Remember the tab is behind the steering center. Anyway, if you want to move it to the left, do so. It's an easy adjustment.

Also, if the AV plate is below the bottom of the hull it's very possible you'll get all sorts of wierd torque in the wheel. That's part of the height deal we talked about.

when you are all done and still have a problem i would install a no feedback steering helm.

engine steering torque will be no isseu anymore.

No feedback or hydraulic steering will hide the torque but it's still there. You just won't feel it in the wheel. Steering torque scrubs off efficiency.

Re: Steering pulls to the right

If you are running the engine at top end with it mounted high and at full trim you may find any trim tab adjustments have negligible affect on steering torque. Most of the tab may be out of the water. An alternative is an aftermarket skeg-mounted torque tab.

Thanks for the input guys!

I'm gonna so some decorating around here if I ever get off of this site. Then I plan to go to "The Parish" and fool with my boat.
