Steering rack

Hello all,

I have a rack question. My boat's steering is hard to turn and squeaks when I turn the wheel. I can turn it, but it is difficult. I have taken off the racks and determined that it is the rack system. My question is this. The current rack is a dual rack system. Is this necessary? My engine is a 1983 Evinrude 140 V4.

I only ask about it needing a dual rack because the price difference is enough that if it isn't necessary then I don't want to spend the extra cash.

Thanks for reading this...

Re: Steering rack

I would think you could get away with a single cable system.

Thanks ezmobee.

What is the purpose of the dual rack? Is it for bigger motors? Easier turning?

Re: Steering rack

It might be a single cable......

Disconnect both cables and try the steering also move the OB by hand......

Now connect one cable and try it..... then repeat with the other....

You might have a cable problem with one or both cables.

The dual cables are usually used on fast hulls with higher HP such as a bass boat or a F&S boat.

BTW iboats sells replacement cables in the store ;)

Re: Steering rack

I can move the outboard by hand, very easy to turn, I also disconnected the racks from the steering wheel and the steering wheel is easy to turn. I will try connecting each rack separately and see if both are bad or if it is just one of them.

My boat is a 19.5' F&S with the 140hp that I mentioned earlier. So would you recommend sticking with the dual rack?

Yes, I have been looking at them in the parts portion and will purchase one from there if need be :)

Re: Steering rack

Well if the boat was equipped with it I would stay with it or if you go single cable new system..... get one rated for V-6 the 140 makes allot of power.
