Steering saft question

I have 1990 Bayliner with 5.0L and alpha I gen I.
Transmom assembly serial # 0C845251. Is there any way to find out if my steering shaft is square or splined?

Ayuh,... The Splines went away back in the late-70s....

Thank you.

My outdrive is loose. Looking at it gimgal ring seems thight. I think steering level is loose.
Pictures show how much play my outdrive has.

That is a LOT of play! You can try retorquing the two gimbal ring clamping screws (at top of ring) to 55 ft lb (nuts on back). It might tighten it back up, but it may be too far gone, and if it is the steering arm it will not help. Let us know how that works out before you tear it apart. Either the ring or the lever the fix is the same.

Anybody used Mercruiser Gimbal plug kit part #22-88847A1. Does it make it easier than tearing everyhing apart?

I took everything apart and nothing looks worn out. I have to replace steering shaft bushings and seal. Any pointers on removing upper bushing?

Is the clamping bolt broken out of the steering lever? If so that is your problem.
