I have a 1989 Regal Valanti 220XL and we have removed the steering cable and the steering wheel, but we do not know how to get the hub that the steering wheel was attached to or the helm out so we can take all the pieces to the marina and get a new system.

Please help

Re: steering system removal

Greetings!

7" grinder wheel with a cutoff blade will take that sucker right out of there. I bet you even have some extra pieces to take to the marina!

Probably a better idea however, would be to ignore the bad advice of a newbie still in the demolition phase of their restoration and post some pictures of what you are looking at instead. Folks here respond well to that and some may offer some actual useful advice without having firsthand knowledge of your make/model setup.

On the other hand I'm finding very few problems my cutoff grinder thingy won't solve. My kids weren't eating their vegtables until I walked in the kitchen with my grinder the other night. Now they ask for seconds! It really needs a name.. something appropriately ominous. Oh! and maybe some flames painted on the side!

umm... yes.. post some pictures.. that would be good.

Respectfully,

Re: steering system removal

Pictures would help. Most come off this way:
-Loosen the center nut holding the wheel on, almost all the way off.
-While pulling up hard on the steering wheel, give the nut a good wack with a hammer. The wheel should come loose.
-Remove the bolts holding the mechanism to the console.

To remove the cable from the mechanism can be a pain as well. Let us know if you need assistance with this.
