What maintance is required for the steering control, not sure what the part is called, but the steering wheel is connected to it. There is a cap screw on one end, are they filled with oil and does it ever need changing. Rod

Re: Steering thing -ama-gij

Hi,

The "thing" that your steering wheel is connected to is named helm pump, assuming it is hydralic steering system you have.
On the backside of the helm there are hydralic houses connected that goes back to the cylinder that moves the outboard (if it is an outboard you have).

Try to find out what make and model of hydralic steering system you have. Hopefully it is some decal or so on helm and cylinder that can give you that information. If You find no such info take a digital photo and post here and maybe someone can tell what make and model You have.

The cap screw (filler port), if it is on the heml, is for filling hydralic oil if you need to do that (and You bleed out any air if needed by opening the bleed niples on the cylinder and following a procedure in your hydralic system users guide).

Chances are You have a SeaStar hydralic steering system since they are very common.
Check what You have (make and model) and report back.
There is probably a website that the manufacturer of your hydralic steering system have and there You should find product info, supportinfo and manuals etc.

You should check the oil level is correct in the heml regularly, the exact level is mentioned in the manual for your hydralic steering system but the helm should be full.
Read here to get an idea what is involved to fill & purge a hydralic system (SeaStar in this case):

http://www.seastarsteering.com/OUTBOARD/oboard.htm?../FILL_PURGE/FillPurge.htm&1

I do not think you need to change the steering system oil but it will not hurt to change it, you need to bleed the system then so all old oil is replaced with new and you have no air in the system, it may take some time to do that.
