Steering trouble

I recently purchased a 1993 Champion bass boat. 19' with a 2001 Mercury 150 Efi. The boat is equipped with a Rapid Jack that raises the outboard about 3" with a 10" setback. The engine came with new steering cables and the motor has very few hours. My problem is very difficult steering at all speeds. I think the jackplate setback is causing too much friction in the steering cables. There appears to be two un-necessary bends in the cables due to engine setback.

Is this common on other rigs with jackplate? What is the best fix? I have considered removing the jackplate since I am not trying to squeeze the most mph from my boat. How much would I lose? Thoughts? thanks, mark

Re: Steering trouble

Since the plate is already installed I see no gain from the work of removing it. Considering the age of the boat, it would be more than prudent to replace steering cables as a safety measure but make sure new ones have sufficient length to avoid kinks.
