Have a 1971 14ft Larson Lapline rebuilding. I have cables down both sides doing a push pull on the motor. Not too smooth. Is there another system I can upgrade to?

I did that conversion on my '66 Starcraft. It is do-able and I was happy with the result. Teleflex rack or rotary system. The big question is if your motor has a steering tube. Mine did so it was an easy conversion.

usually cable pulley system is rough because the outer casing on the cables is pealing off. or the pulleys need replacing. or bearing gone in the helm. simplest is a teleflex rotary replacement, what motor do you have?

Re: Steering upgrade?

I second the vote for teleflex rotary.
i was in the same boat as you with the pulley-system. I have a '65 and '66 33 HP 'rude. they are not thru-tube steering so i had to get a special kit that supported the new steering cable which then mounted to the same place the hooks on the pulleys mount to...

Here are some pics of my set up to give you a better idea of what im talkin about

I have a 69 johnson 55hp. I don't have a tube. The cables attach to a spring on each side of the engine and hook into a bracket on the back of the engine..
