So this past weekend a buddy of mine accidentally fell into the steering wheel, which already was not in the best of shape. Needless to say, the wheel itself is no longer attached but everything else is still intact. I'm wondering if anyone here has had experience with replacing a steering wheel like this and if you have any recommendations on a particular type that will do the job. I understand getting that central nut off can be pretty hard and that you can snap the shaft. Also, I was reading that there was a woodruff pin that you have to watch out for. Anyways, this is a new one for me and any help is much appreciated - I can get pictures up tonight if need be. Thanks

I don't think the shafts are particularly fragile. What you're being careful of is messing up the threads. Loosen the nut and position it so it's covering the top of the shaft. Then take a whack at it with a hammer while pulling up on what's left of your wheel. It should pop right off (I just did this myself on Sunday actually). Believe it or not, boat steering wheels are darn near universal. I was even able to replace the wheel on my '66 Starcraft with a brand new one and if fit right on.

You won't get any cheaper than this one http://www.iboats.com/Det-Mar-Legen...26426584--**********.429988125--view_id.38673 which I put on my last boat and it came with the new steering system I got for my new boat. Works fine. You can also get real fancy if you'd like.

nothing's left of the wheel so I guess it's just a matter of buying a new one, taking the nut off, and installing it. I was worried I was going to damage the woodruff key or that the new wheels wouldn't be universal. Thanks, that's great news
