steering wheel question

ok, folks, another silly question for you.
I am restoring a 1969 Starcraft. Part of that restoration is building a new console for the remote steering. The steering is the rotary steering for the 50 HP Evinrude. So far, so good. I have taken the console out of the boat, and the steering cable off the steering wheel assembly. I now have a steering wheel through the console, but I see no bolts or screws to remove in order to remove the steering wheel from the console. Obviously, I have a lock ring or something holding the steering wheel assembly on the console. Any thoughts before I start (probably) destroying something?

thanks for your help!

Re: steering wheel question

remove the center of the steering wheel should just pop out. there is a nut down in there, loosen the nut to the end of the shaft. leave nut on to protect the threads, now sit down in front of the wheel, knees behind wheel, putting pressure on the wheel, hit nut a good rap with a hammer, should pop off, the you can get to the mounting bolts.

Re: steering wheel question

got it! I had taken the nut off, and had tried to pull the steering wheel off, to no avail.

However, when I put the nut back on, used a hammer to 'tap' it out (ok, it required more than a 'tap'.......more like a 'whap.....WHAP......WHAP!!!) then it came right out....Thanks:)
