my steering wheel cracked at the hub. about a 3 inch long crack. still working but i'm afraid it might completely let go. so my question is what holds the steering wheel to the shaft? is it a tapered shaft? a splined shaft? big nut? is it hard to get off like a car steering wheel?

Just replace the whole system. I think they are all tapered shaft but it depends on the set up that you have. They are alot easier to remove than a car steering wheel typically a center nut, and should just be able to pull them right off. You may meet some resistance from corrosion or such, spray it down really well with liquid wrench a day or two ahead of time. I would honestly consider replacing the whole system especially if its the original steering a new rack and pinion set up can be had for less than $200

They have a nut and a woodruff key. Back the nut off but leave it on the threads and pull on it. If it doesn't come free then while you pull have someone tap the nut with a hammer, it should just pop off.

Do it like Watermann said. I loosen the nut and hit the shaft with Tri-Flow lubricant. Sit in the seat and use your knees to pull up on the wheel as you smack the nut with a hammer..
