I would like to remove my steering wheel to make it centered when we are going straight. I removed the nut but it will not come off. I tried WD40 but it still will not come off. Am I missing something or is there another way? Brian

Re: steering wheel

Most steering wheels are pressed on to a tapered shaft when you torque the nut. You probably need a steering wheel puller to get it off. In addition, the steering wheel is keyed so I don't think you can just turn to where you want it.

Re: steering wheel

I would think adjusting the other end would be a little easier.

But, to remove the wheel- put the nut back on, flush with the threads.
get a helper to pull the wheel straight off while you give the nut a good hit with a brass hammer or a block of wood over the nut. A few hits and it should come off.
If the wheel has a key and not splines your wasting your time.

looks like a rotary system, someone mentioned adjusting the other end. How is that done?

Re: steering wheel

If you can see the mounting bracket under the steering wheel, then look
for a series of mounting holes in that bracket. I just installed one that has
6 different positions to choose from for mounting the steering mechanism.

If the mounting bracket doesn't have holes for different positions, then the
bracket has to be mounted to the console or dash through holes somewhere.
If you know how much you want to rotate the wheel position to center, you
can drill a new set of holes to mount the bracket onto by that difference.

To free up the steering wheel for removal, I'd suggest some rust remover like
BP. Let it soak in for awhile. Good luck!

Re: steering wheel

the easiest way to do it is to disconnect the cable under the helm, turn steer wheel to the left, til the cable comes completely out. center steering wheel, now insert cable, til it engages, turn steering wheel to right til the lock clicks. it should be centered. if not repeat and adjust the starting point of the steering wheel til it comes out right.
