Anyone know if the steering wheel from an old cable/pulley system will bolt onto a new rotary helm?
I'd like to keep my factory crestliner wheel if possible.

Re: steering wheel

rotary helms have a taper and woodruff key, i doubt the cable system is the same, and adapter could be made if your handy with a lathe.

Ayuh,...

There's been Abunch of mounting options over the years,...

Todays are pretty much standardized at either the 3/4" tapered, or the 1" tapered shafts...

I guess it'll depend onwhat Crestliner used....

ah I see. Guess I"ll order without a wheel, and if it turns out I need one then I'll try and find something that looks like the original.

Re: steering wheel

why not pull the wheel and see, a lot of them are the 3/4 taper, some have one key way, some 2.

i loosen the center hub bolt so it is flush with the shaft, put my knees behind the steering wheel, and smack the shaft/nut with a hammer, the wheel usually breaks free, by the 3 rap.

Re: steering wheel

The boat is down at my parents house so I can't go check it out right now, I had measured for the cable but didn't pull the old steering out yet. I was hoping it would be an easy answer, but like most stuff its not haha. Thanks for the removal tips, I know its got a huge nut on the back side where the spool for the cable is, I had thought that it might be difficult to remove.

Re: steering wheel

the nut you loosen is in the center of the steering wheel, not the back side. should be a pop off cover.

Re: steering wheel

I was able to put a brand new wheel on my cable system with no issue. So I'd imagine the reverse would be just as possible.

Re: steering wheel

oh yeah I guess the wheel bolts in on the front in the rotary system, so if I had to unbolt the old one from the back it wouldn't work..duh. hopefully my current wheel works for the new system :) I'll post an update when I find out!

Re: steering wheel

I got lucky, the bolt came right off, and the old wheel used a 3/4" tapered shaft and a single key, just like the new :)
The drum from the old cable system said patent pending...I think that patent is probably taken care of now lol
