OK, I hate to admit it, but I pulled a good one this weekend. We'll call this one "Sometimes doctors aren't too bright"
I bought a neglected bass boat that hadn't even been started in about 6 or 7 years. I did all kinds of work on the engine, got it started and running pretty well... it's almost ready.
I replaced some old flooring, re-carpeted, replaced the seats, got the lights and trolling motor working (remember this is will come into the story later). I got the finish resurfaced, etc...
Well the fishing season is quickly passing me by so I called a good friend (still a good friend by the way) and said the boat is running good, and the necessities are all working, lets get out and try it out a little.
Well we launched the boat at the local lake...I did remember the plug!!!
I turned the key and she fired right up. I put it in reverse and once I cleared the docks, I turned, or should I say I tried to turn her around...NOT!!!
You guessed it, the steering cables were seized. #%$@%*!!! All that work and I never once thought to turn the steering wheel.
You'd think after all these years of school, I would have a little more foresight than this.
Well being the diehard fishermen we are we weren't going to let a little thing like a lack of maneuverability stop us. We dropped the troller and I fast idled the boat while my friend sat in the front fishing seat and steered with the trolling motor. What we lack in foresight we made up for in ingenuity.
We made it to a decent fishing area and managed to catch a few fish. At least the day wasn’t a total loss.
