I have an older teleflex rack and pinion steering and there seems to be a lot of "play" in it. Is there some way to take some of the slop out of it, or do I have to replace the whole thing?

Secondly, the boat pulls to the left even at slow speed. Is this just torque. Is there some way to adjust it?

Re: steering

Make sure the "play" is in the cable, not in the motor (mounts, ect). What kind of motor? When you say the boat pulls, do you mean the steering? Are you sure it pulls left? Depending on what motor it is there is a torque tab that can be adjusted. If the steering pulls left, move the tab to the left.

Re: steering

It is a late 80's volvo penta. I checked it out further and found that the steering arm on the outdrive is loose. I need to figure out if I can tighten it up or it needs replacing.

If I let go of the steering wheel the boat make a hard left.

There is a fin where the exhaust comes out which I believe is what you are talking about.

If the boat turns left would'nt I want to move the fin to the right?

Re: steering

Dado, I have replaced many steering components on volvo 270 an 280's. The steering "fork" on the outside of the boat has a splined ALUMINUM shaft that goes up thru the sterring arm inside the boat, the arm is cast steel. the arm never wears, and the aluminum shaft an plastic bushings ALWAYS wear out these are what you need to replace. When done the drive wont flop around as much, but the boat will still wander at off plane speeds.........is typical of v bottom boats.
