Hi Query on a steering issue.
We have a 21 foot deck boat with a 5.0l Volvo Penta GL Stern Drive Single prop series.

Since the last 2 outings we literally have to fight with the steering to keep the boat straight. If you leave it the boat turns an abrupt left. Far too much resistance from the steering wheel when boat is going forward even at half throttle.

I Checked the steering at idling speed on dry dock and also in water. Seems to be fine when turned from lock to lock. No steering cable isues, no oil pump squealing , plenty of steerting oil., v smooth operation. Resistance only happens under power in the water when going straight or turning right.

I did see some v light oil traces around the drive unit when the boat was in the water and did a thorough check on dry dock. Engine oil fine, gear oil , power steering oil all fine. When checked on dry dock could not see any drips.

are there any serviceable steering bits anywhere that may need to be checked systematically.??

Any suggestions for this strange handling.

Re: steering

Adjust the trim tab on the back of the outdrive.

My picture is of the wrong drive. See what happens when you don't give model numbers at the start.

Don't you have a owners manual? If not, go to the link below and download one for your engine model number (you will need the FULL number or the SN)

http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopent...lication_search/pages/publication_search.aspx

On your steering, look to see if the cable is free to swing back and forth and in and out of the power steering unit. if the cable is not free to move, it will cause problems.
