Re: Steers Right

Do you mean that when cruising the boat tends to steer to the right?

That is a side effect of the prop spinning in the water and can be compensated for by trimming the tab on the avtiventilation plate, just rear of the prop.

http://www.spidybot.com/prop/prop_048.htm

The boat does tend to turn right. It is hard to make left turns, At the ramp the motor turned right when in gear.
Dead Eye

Re: Steers Right

If it's related to the prop turning (not a power steering or steering cable issue -check separately), my previous post is it.

Re: Steers Right

If it pulls to the right, move the back of the trim tab to the right in small increments until it no longer pulls. Start with it in the straight position.

The antiventalation plate?
What would cause the motor to turn right on the trailer? Also difficult to turn left?

Re: Steers Right

Dead Eye,

The anti cavitation plate is the plate just above the propeller. The trim tab is that tab sticking down just behind the propeller.

When you put your boat in reverse, the prop wants to "walk" to the right.

Your steering may be a bit loose, however you need to get it trimmed right before you start looking at steering tension.

Dead Eye,

Not the fin below the prop, the one ABOVE it.

The bolt that holds it may come down from the top.

Backed the boat down the ramp . Stopped when the motor was deep enough. Started it up! Does the anti-cativation plate effect steering that much? When the boat is in the water it wants to turn right difficult to turn left.

Re: Steers Right

Dead Eye

Lets go back to rickdb1boat's last post. If the boat is on the trailer and not in gear, there is no forward motion and no prop rotation thrust. The motor should just sit there! Do you have hydraulic or some power assisted steering?

Re: Steers Right

Adjust the tab as Rick suggests. I had a similar problem but solved it by offsetting the trailing edge of the tab slightly to the right as you look at it from behind the boat. You may have to adjust it a few times to get the balance right. I can run at all speeds now without holding the wheel - she runs straight.

Re: Steers Right

You put the boat in gear on the trailer????

I assume you mean in reverse to back it off the trailer, right? And at that time the motor turned to the right... THE BACK OF THE MOTOR TURNED TO THE RIGHT, anyway?

If you were in reverse and the back of the motor turned to the right, which would cause the steering wheel to want to turn clockwise, the trim tab probably has nothing to do with it, because your speed is non existent at that point..

You may then have a problem with the steering cable... Does it turn freely when the motor is not in gear?

If the above happened in forward gear, follow the previous advice from above poster's...

Re: Steers Right

The boat was firmly strapped on the trailer.{18ft wellcraft fisherman} The strap held the boat on the trailer. Put it in forward to test the water pump/flow. Is it wrong to put it in gear{forward } on a trailer?
Thanks, Dead Eye

Not as long as the prop does not hit bottom.
But if water pump is pumping, it will do so in neutral too.
