Sterdrive Gear Ratio

How do I figure out what gear ratio I need ....no engine or outdrive in project boat original engine was a 4.3lx which I plan on replacing with same thing....I think my gear ratio should be 1.81 but how do I figure this out for sure.

1.81 is the right ratio for a 4.3 L

look in the drive manual for the serial number of drive and proper ratio

Your engine SN shows it's a model 443L100JS, 4.3LX from 1996. The 1.81:1 is what came standard for that model.
