My stereo shuts off when I turn up the volume above 24 or so. I have a sony xplode I'm running 2 Pioneers 6 1/2 and 2 Kenwoods 6x9 with the head unit and 1 300 watt amp powering 1 12" sub. Originally the sub would shut off at volume about 20 and the other speakers would continue working so I turned the gain down on amp and now the volume gets to about 24 but the entire system shuts down.

Thank you.

try checking your voltage at the radio with everything running sounds like its shutting down to undercurrent to protect the radio. Your battery voltage may be fine but a loose connection or voltage drop near the radio could be causing your problem.

Check voltage right at the radio, fuse block and battery then let us know what you're getting

If the voltages check out you could have a speaker grounding out or a blown speaker that is causing things to go into protection mode. The amp is normally turned on by the head unit so if it goes off so does the amp!

I had experience with the early Sony Explodes. Many had heat issues, and shut themselves down. It may be your problem. If nothing else works; if you have warranty you can send it back. Good Luck.

Do you have the amp bridged? If so alot of times it will get hotter when it is bridged.Try hooking speaker into amp not bridged and you shouldn't have a problem unless there is a wire loose or connected wrong. Check your ground.Your amp is telling you something if it keeps shutting off. As stated above it is protecting it self from blowing. Hook positive into positive and negative into negative on 1 channel of the amp. If it is bridged you will have your speakers hot wire in #1 channel hot and the ground in #2 channel ground. What this would be doing if hooked up bridged is feeding power off of both channel giving you max watts out of the amp to each speaker which tends to overheat the amp fast unless you have a capacitor hooked up. You can also buy bass blockers for the other speakers so when you want more bass out of the sub it won't hurt your mids when you turn the bass up on your head unit. Good luck.

For what it's worth, I also have a Sony xplode, no extra amp, running 4 Jensen 6 1/2 speakers, and it does not shut down.

Re: Stereo shuts off

What size wiring do you have supplying power and ground to the head unit and amp? It sounds like a lack of power issue, like PondTunes said.
