Stereo/Speaker Combo

I'm replacing the stereo and speakers in my SeaRay BR200.

I am looking at the Kicker KM60 6 1/2" 2-way Marine speakers. These are rated at 2 - 65 watts RMS. I've never used Kicker speakers, anyone have an opinion (like/dislike) these or Kicker speakers in general?

Also, I need a new receiver, most of the ones I have seen in my price range ($150-$225) are only rated in the 17 - 20 watts RMS. If I bought the Kicker speakers rated up to 65 watts RMS would I be under powering them too much with only a 17 or 20 watt RMS receiver? Would that combination still sound ok?

And one last question...of the marine receivers in that price range...which manufacturer produces the better receiver? Dual, Sony, Clarion, Jensen, JBL?

Thanks,

Jeff

When purhasing Marine speakers remeber this, as long as they use a poly cone (non paper) they can be called marine. Poly is short for a plastic or resign based cone Ive looked losely at a lot of marine speakers and have yet to see a spider (protects the voice coil) that is poly, In short dont be concerned with the word Marine, buy what suites you taste in sound and budget..8)

I am using the Kicker KB600's and they sound great. Like said above, I would not worry about using marine specific speakers, just make sure they are not paper cones. One thing I like about marine speakers though, is that they usually have a better grill to help with splashes. Same thing with the radio, I have always used a regular car cd player in boat and it has been there for years. They will come with higher RMS wattages at a lower price too. All this is assuming you are not in salt water.

If you haven't done so, I would go with an Alpine setup. Head Unit, amp, speakers. The richness and clarity is unparalleled. It may set you back a grand but all worth it.

Kicker is a great speaker. One of the first and still one of the best. Any kicker speaker will put out more sound than you will ever need with proper power. I didn't put any marine equipment in my boat. I used cheap speakers, $25 per 2 6X9, $19 per 2 5 1/4. The all have polypropylene cones and I know will last for a few years. If they fail, I can replace them cheaply. In general, marine speakers are under powered and overly expensive. My 6 X 9s are rated at 225 watts peak each.
