this week end was on river in my boat that has 165 h.p. inline six, I think the drive is an alpha one?, went through wake from other boat. drive disengaged and would not go back in gear. the prop would rotate as if in idle. I finally got it to go in reverse but same as in forward prop rotated as if in idle, engine running fine, but prop only turned enough to push like a troll motor. any ideas on the problem.

Re: stern drive problem

If the engine still revs up you may have spun the prop hub.

Re: stern drive problem

As mentioned, - it sounds like a spun prop hub... or engine coupler. Try a different prop and see if that solves it. At the very least, you can mark a line on your prop hub - use the boat - then check to see if the line is still lined up. If not, definitely a spun prop.
