Hello everyone. I have a Mercruiser 888 motor and stern drive. I need to take off my stern for inspection and cleaning. I also need to change the impeller. I just wanted to ask is there anything I should be extra careful with when doing this. Any advice or tips would be great. Thanks.

Re: Stern Drive Tips

You might want to go to the I/O forum and go to the "adults only" section. They might have the manual that goes to your drive.
As far as actually removing the drive, it?s easy. Put it in full forward gear (engine off) remove 2 nuts for the trim cylinders, remove 6 nuts to free the outdrive and pull it off. 30 minute job for a first timer.
The water pump in the drive is also very easy to change, but it?s more detailed than removing the drive. You need a manual. What I can recommend is to make or buy a pump to pressure test the drive BEFORE you re-install it. You can build one cheap and new they are only like 30 bucks. If you do want to make your own in the "adults only" section there is an example for you to look at. Post any questions this job may bring up in the I/O section, you will get more help over there.
Good luck.
