When I got my boat, it didnt have a stern light. I am searching on line, and in catalogs, and noticed that there are different hights. My boat is a 20' deep-V cuddy How do I determine how high the stern light should be to be seen at night?
I belive you are looking for what is called an "all round light" rather than a stern light. A stern light shines only behind your boat and is not visible from the front or sides. Which is to say anywhere you can see the red or green sidelights. The all-round light is visible from any direction.

Our regulations do not require stern lights on boats less than 12m (39.4'), yours are probably similair
(I just checked this, your's are identical)
The all-round light must be at least 1m (3.3') higher than the red & green sidelights. Get whatever length pole will acomadate that minimum difference and will also allow the light to be seen right around the boat.

boat-ed.com/wa/course/p4-9_navlights.htm
