Stern Light Socket broke

Hi all -
Recently purchased my first boat - 1999 Sea Pro and today when I was fiddling around to put the stern light in and when I was taking it out, i somehow broke the socket and the base of the pole that has the stern light. So now, the pole just goes through to the bottom -- basically whatever electronic mechanism there was is gone.

Any ideas on what to do? Is it a DIY thing? Unfortunately, I am not too much of a handy man....

Thanks!

Re: Stern Light Socket broke

well it could be but then some folks might rather pay to get it fixed.

generally these are under $10 at walmart and take 10 minutes to replace but I suppose yours may have something different

If you want to try and you want advice show us pictures

You could probably just fish the wires out and replace the socket, but you need to be comfortable doing that sort of thing.

Those sockets and poles are available at most Wal-Mart stores in the boating section.

Not too hard at all. Snap some pics and we can probably locate an exact rpl part.

You didn't say but you'll probably need to determine why the original socket failed. Did the socket just break, or screws stripped out or maybe even the area of the boat rotted where the screws were? A rust problem with the socket or screws?

If there is another problem that actually caused the socket to fail then that would certainly need to be addressed.

As the others have said, it is a pretty simple job normally to change one of these out. Usually just a matter of taking out the screws, removing socket, disconnect two wires and then reversing the process using the new socket.

No rust - I think I was just being impatient when trying to take the stern light out -- thanks for all the replies , I will try to fix it, if not, I will post pictures.

Thanks again.
