Hello all, I have been searching the web for days trying to find out if and where I need to add gear oil into my sterndrive. I'm almost certain that I do because over the winter when I had it put in my barn there was some drops of gear oil on the ground. I have been trying to find a manual without buying one lol, but I have had no luck. I have a 1989 alpha one. Serial #OC742810 if that helps anyone out. I did have one manual but it was for a generation 2 so when I went to check on the sterndrive and nothing matched up and I could not find the dipstick, vent plug or drain plug. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

remove vent on top of the lower unit (located on side), remove plug in bottom (near skeg), force oil up until it comes out vent. put vent back in, then put plug back in.

however a fluid replacement should be part of your winterizing. I would also look at getting a water pump kit and a lower unit seal kit. my guess is that you have not changed the impeller every two years either.

Thanks Scott, I will check on that tomorrow. No I have not changed it obviously. We just got it back in October and only had it on the lake a few times before I had to winterize it. Then I only had a manual for the engine and I did not know that there was a separate manual for the sterndrive. But now I do and a lot more things to check and do maintenance on.
