Hi I was wondering what everyone uses for a holding fixture when working on the upper or lower units. I see many stands around but no acual fixtures to hold the units when working on them.

thx for the reply , I'm not looking for a stand , I'm looking for a bench top holding fixture for working on the upper or lower unit, able to reposition in various ways.

i've no answer for ya for the upper. other than it seems like the bottom of the upper is flat (from memory) and could be set on a table. it would be nose heavy though if the drive shaft was still connected.
for the lower only. i've use two blocks of wood and clamp the skeg of the lower into a vise. the blocks of wood to protect the skeg when i clamp it down tight. i don't think i've used this method when the drive is complete. like in lower and upper bolted together. that i just use the drive stand for.

You make the part to hold the lower but instead of mating it to a floor stand, weld a piece of pipe that sicks out of the side, then mount another piece of slightly larger pipe to the bench, so you can insert the pipe on the holder into the pipe on the bench then use a set screw like what is used on an engine stand.
For the uppers, I just set it on wood blocks on top of the work bench.

I use two 3.5-4' 2x6s about 3.75" apart and lay them on the bench on the flat with a couple feet hanging over and C-clamp them to the bench. If your bench is wood you can also run a couple deck screws in the far end to the bench. Works great. Then just slide the drive onto the 2Xs resting it on the cavity plate. Goodluck.

For a one time use by a DIYer, a Black & Decker Workmate will work wonders, and then you can use it for other things.

You're right Don. The workmate is great. I just had a new lower unit installed and wanted to clean and paint the upper. Open it up set the outdrive in and clamp lightly, works great.
