It has been a few years I think since I’ve been on here, it’s nice to be back. One question I have is I will be replacing the motor in my 1990 Sea Ray Sundancer with a 454 in it, I already removed the old motor, and disconnected the electrical from the pigtail on the boat. I guess my question is is it OK to turn the batteries on to lower and raise the sterndrive for storage well this is done? Or what do I have to do in order to raise and lower the drive

No issue with running trim with motor out, just look where the cables are so they don't short out. Its normal for the trim motor to be connected to the starter post along with the battery cable, will probably need to make a connection

Have to pull the outdrive to remove and install the motor, just wondering why you reinstalled the drive?

Nope....I was able to pull the motor without pulling the drive, I just had to rotate the motor 90 degrees once I unbolted it

You did it the hard way. It also took you an extra half hour

You gotta pull the drive anyway when you install the motor

So either pull the drive and align the motor and install the drive
OR if you prefer
pull the drive ,pull the motor, replace the coupler, replace the motor, align engine, replace drive

All this from me asking a question about the trim....sheesh. I pulled the motor 2 years ago and all I want to know is if I can raise and lower the drive with the trim motor

with the drive removed first to remove the motor , there no need to raise the trim cylinders

edit button not working in here You will never be able to align the motor with the drive installed. Without aligning the motor to the coupler you will destroy the coupler and will have to pull the motor to replace the coupler. If you pull just the motor again to replace the coupler you will again be replacing the coupler from misalignment

I understand all this perfectly. I do plan on pulling the drive WHEN I do install the motor. All I want to know is if I can use the trim motor to raise and lower it.

Ha, well, that's what you get for leaving your boat unused for two years :D

But yeah, you can hook up battery and the trim motor is wired separate from the ignition. Trim will work.

It may not be a good idea to hook up the battery to raise the drive in this case.

Probably better to pull the trim cylinders mounting stud and strap the drive and cylinders out of the way. The stud has to come out the remove the drive anyway.

Or just pull the drive and heave it inside the boat or garage.

Well....Kinda hard to use a boat with a bad motor in it, and the place that I bought the repairs manufactured motor from kind of screwed me because they were out of California and they sold me a bad motor and of course when I try to get a hold of them they are out of business now, so now I am stuck at the drawing board trying to get this boat back on the water

You know. On second thought, I think I’m just going to disconnect the trim Rams and strap the drive up
