I just received a FREE 1974 Sruery open bow. It is in good shape with an 85 evinrude. The prob is it only will turn left fully less than half to the right . This is info from old owner who is a fried. He said underload will not go right at all but left is fine. I'm in MN so it's a little cold to mess with it to much but any suggestions on where to look first? Oh and it has the push/pull type cable

Re: Steury steering prob

Your steering is probably either Rack or Rotary. Rack will have a bar appox 18 " long behind the dash and roatary will have a round chamber. I'm guessing it will be rack.

I'm also going to guess the problem will be in the rack mechanism. It is possible to tear these down and fix them if you're kinda handy. If not then you can just spend a little over $100 bucks and buy a whole new system. Your choice.

On the back of the dash it has a roundish metal box. So it sounds rotary. Are these repairable or easily replaced? Are they a generic part similar on many boats? Any info will help!

Did some looking and the rotarys seem standard with cable length being the difference. Can it be swapped without removing motor? It has a 1974 85hp evinrude so it's heavy without a hoist!

If it's just the cable but it sounds like the rotary has an issue. If it turns great one direction but not the other then the gears in the rotary box may be damaged. Teleflex does not recommend trying to repair a rotary system. I'd recommend measuring your boat for a new system.

Ayuh,... Usually there ain't enough clearance to get the ole cable out, or the new 1 in, without atleast tippin' the motor over abit...

Looks very similar but mine is longer with rear jump seats. Will teleflex or uflex kits bolt up with only minor dash mods? Or will I need this and that adapter to mount wheel and hook up the motor? Any ideas on which brand is better? I just want to make sure to get all parts at once.
