I have a 1998 checkmate 261 with Quicksilver 3000 classic controls.
My problem is going from forward to reverse. It is very stiff going into reverse. Once it is in reverse it will go into neutral easily and back into reverse easily. But if you put it in forward then try reverse again it will be very stiff.
Any ideas as to what to check first? Thanks for any help

Disconnect the controller shift cable from the lever on the engine shift plate and see if shifting improves. If it does, the out drive shift cable may be the problem. If not, your controller or controller shift cable may be ready for replacement. $orry if it comes to that. Parts for older Merc. controllers are scarce. Maybe a salvaged one on Ebay. My bud abandoned his and bought a >$300 new aftermarket controller. I replaced my out drive shift cable. Simple enough by the manual, but even with the special tool to remove the bell housing cable end fitting, it was ugly. Replacing the controller will be pricey, but far more simple than what I did.
