i have a 1991 225 johnson, every now and then the starter stays on , you try to start motor turn key motor
turns dosent start right away release the key and the starter is still spinning, you tap the solenoid and it stops, some times i have tried to start the motor and it starts up and runs fine, you shut the key off motor stops and the starter is still spinning, i have replaced the solenoid 3 time now and every now then it will happen again. if it stays on to lond it will blow fuse in motor or melt a wire or two.

Re: Sticking solenoid

If you were to check the wire to the solenoid from the keyswitch (yellow/red if I remember right) with a voltmeter when it's acting up I bet you'd find you have voltage. There's only two places that wire could possibly be getting voltage from. First - that wire goes to the powerpack to activate fast-start, it's a long shot and I don't think this is the problem but if the powerpack were backfeeding voltage onto that wire it would do this. Second - and I think this is what you ought to check, you could have a bad keyswitch.

Re: Sticking solenoid

Quite often, to get to the root of this problem, there is a bad ground. I'm guessing the ground from the solenoid to the block is dirty from 22 years o9f not being removed and cleaned. You'll probably find un-clean surfaces at your battery as well. Both these lead to a solenoid that sticks, and ultimately destroys the $$$tarter. Not sure where your problem is now, but once you get that figured out, clean all battery and engine grounds.

Re: Sticking solenoid

The motor was stripped down to the bear block and bored over 20 and totally rebuilt, all cables are brand new, only thing used is the key switch and cable back to the motor. but i will look to make sure ,

Thank you !!!
