I decided to start a new post concerning my problem but you can go here and see what I am dealing with.

I got the gimbal housing apart so that I can get a closer look at things. Can anyone take a look at the pictures and tell me if they can see any damage that the bearing possibly did. I removed the bellows and found no tears or holes. The adhesive was still strong and the clamps were tight so I don't see where water could've entered. There was definitely moisture involved evident by how rusty the u-joints were even though they were still greasy. I did notice that there was no grease seal installed. Don't know where it disappeared to as I'm sure it was there when I put the transom assembly on the boat.

I have ordered new shift cable, u-joints, gimbal bearing, gasket set, and bellows adhesive. Can anyone think of anything else?

grease gun and marine grease together with an engine alignment tool.yearly maintenance had been left for more than a season as you can see by the inner race of the gimbal bearing still on the shaft.good luck getting the outer race out too.

Yeah, I got the inner race off or should I say a friends grandfather did. I hope toi have a new bearing puller tomorrow and if so tomorrow afternoon I will tru to get it out of there. I have an alignment tool and grease gun. I think when I put the gimbal bearing in the last time that I didn't align the grease holes up and the grease wasn't going into the bearing but rather on the outside.

Ok, I got the new u-joints on. What all do I need to apply grease to. The u-joints came pre-greased but should I still apply grease to the zerks. I have mercruiser gimbal and u-joint grease. Do I apply any where else other than the zerks?

I still haven't gotten the outter race out of the housing. I really have only tried once. This weekend I will finally get out there and get that out. I am still waiting on the gimbal bearing grease seal to arrive so that is another reason for my procrastinating. Once I get the new gimbal bearing in I know I have to grease it by aligning the holes on the housing with the hole in the bearing and injecting grease into the zerk on the side of the housing. Anything else that I will need to do as far as greasing everything up?

Re: Sticky situation PT II

Hi,
Just went thru the same maintenance this year, I greased my gimbal brg. while the drive was still off so I could see the grease fill the brg. Gave it a spin back and forth with my fingers and hit it again. Was reassuring to see the grease fill the cavity to know it was in the right spot.

I also put a little scratch on the flat surface of the brg. where the grease hole was to help line it up.
Good Luck with it.

The bottom of the bellows mounting flange on your transom shield appears to be corroded away pretty badly, as you can see inside the red circled area in your pic below. It's a pretty common problem if your bellows has been leaking, or the little "galvanic corrosion prevention" clip isn't on it.

Could be where your water is getting in if the bellows can't make a good seal. I've heard of a kit to repair them, never used it myself. Here it is:

Might be something to think about.
